Responsibilities The Radiological, Mechanical, and Subsurface Systems Department is seeking early to mid-career candidates to enhance its geothermal and subsurface science capabilities for energy and environment research and development design and modeling. This position will support INL's subsurface science group and geothermal, fossil energy, energy/water nexus, and environmental remediation programs.You must have strong research, computer modeling, and analytical skills. Must have a foundational education in scientific principles related to geological areas such as geochemical field work, geothermal exploration, geophysics, hydrogeology, geochemistry, and other comparable disciplines. Must be able to perform basic calculations to analyze and evaluate geological properties associated with the movement, heat transfer, water transport, and solid mechanics of geological systems. This includes the application of the scientific method, field sampling, laboratory analysis, and other scientific principles as applied in an R&D environment. Must have good written and verbal communication skills; a publication record is desired. You will contribute to the preparation of reports and papers that result from analysis and evaluation of data and may present work at technical conferences/workshops. You will work in a team environment. This position may involve some travel and some work outside normal office hours.The position will require you to: Apply sound scientific principles to develop and deliver specific data, analyses, system models, and system designs based on research and development objectives and deliverables including design documents and written procedures Independently identify, collect, and analyze data from research experiments, hardware assemblies and components, and numerical models Contribute to the development of program plans; identify concepts for new business and assist in their development Extract and compile technical data and documentation as required and contribute to technical reports, publications, and presentations at national technical meetings and project reviews with program sponsors Support management and work program leadership in meeting DOE/industry expectations, milestones and deliverables, and INL internal reporting metrics Interface and develop relations with other labs and industry related to current work scopeQualifications: Bachelors and 4 years of relevant experience, Masters and 2 years of relevant experience, or a PhD in Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry, Hydrology, or equivalent disciplines.Special Requirements and/or Training:Preferred candidate must work well in a team environment and is expected to be a team contributor. The position involves occasional travel and some work outside normal office hours.The preferred candidate will have: Demonstrated experience with geothermal energy, geothermal facilities, and power plant data and reservoir models to evaluate data Enough familiarity with geothermal systems that they will be able to perform necessary analysis with limited oversight Demonstrated experience with other renewable energy sources, including wind, hydropower and solar Demonstrated experience with NITS's RefProp, ArcGIS Microsoft Access, MatLab and Aspen products Demonstrated abilities to follow written procedures, guidelines, and rules as well as documenting work that has been performed Good written and verbal communication skills Selective Service Requirements To be eligible for employment at INL males between ages 18 and 25 must register (or must have registered) with the Selective Service System (SSS).
